TAPESTRIES
A GROS POINT NEEDLEWORK TABLE CARPET with forty-two oblong panels worked
with flowering plants and fruiting trees, some in hillocky landscapes with animais, the
others with pond foreground and waterfowl, ail with tobacco-coloured background and
divided by ivory strapwork embroidered with flowers, much of the detail in petit point,
6ft. lin. by 6ft. Hin. (185cm. by 210cm.) circa 1600, worn, some repairs, probably reduced
in size and now with double band between the outer and succeeding row of panels, five
panels replaced
CUSHIONS. Three oblong cushions with panels of 17th Century Franco-Flemish
tapestry border pieces of floral design on a sable field, each with braided fringe, 23V2in.

A FRANCO-FLEMISH TAPESTRY BORDER FRAGMENT woven with tulips and summer
flowers tied with blue ribbon, narrow yellow border stripes, 43V4in. high by 17′Ain. wide
(110cm. by 44cm.) circa 1700, mounted on board

A MYTHOLOGiCAL TAPESTRY of early 17th Century style woven with Meleager
and Atalanta and the slaying of the Calydonian boar, on a faded blue field woven with
strapwork entwined with fruiting pomegranate and flowering branches, 3ft. 8in. high by
6ft. 5in. wide (112cm. by 195cm.) second half 19th Century, Flemish (?), with unidentified
weaver’s mark PBF above eagle in a shield
A BRUSSELS MYTHOLOGICAL TAPESTRY of Venus and Adonis, the Goddess alighting
from her chariot drawn by swans, to discover the body of Adonis, the four-sided border
with trophies of flowers at the sides and fruit and flowers above and below, 12ft. 3in.

AN ANTWERP MYTHOLOGICAL TAPESTRY of a sacrifice to Jupiter, a man in classical
armour with a blue tunic and a red cloak escorting a kneeling princess, a priest pouring
sacrificial oil onto an altar before a golden statue of Jupiter, architectural background,
7ft. 9in. high by 8ft. wide (235cm. by 245cm.) circa 1700
THE RETURN FROM HARVEST. A TENIERS TAPESTRY by Pieter and Frans Van der
Borcht, on the right a farmer riding a donkey under a lychgate, preceded by a dancing
couple and a piper with another couple departing, landscape background with a distant
chateau, 7ft. 5in. by 9ft. 4in. wide (225cm. by 285cm.) Brussels, mid-18th Century, patched
and painted repairs

and her handmaid on their knees before the bearded general, attended by captains of his
army and a bearded soothsayer, mainly in shades of blue, yellow and green, within a four-
sided sable border woven with military trophies, 8ft. 7in. high by 12ft. 9in. wide (232cm. by
390cm.) late 1 Ith Century
A PAIR OF AUBUSSON TAPESTRY PORTIERES of the Continents, after Le Brun, depicting Europe and Asia, the former as queen of the world, crowned and holding a sceptre, a model of a
temple in her left hand and a horse beside her, the latter as a turbaned potentate holding a censer, a camel beside him, both in frame pattern borders, each about lOft. 6in.
high by 3ft. 6in. wide (320cm. by 107cm.) circa 1700, some reweaving
